In the second half of the Time Machine we see the time traveler go even further into the future. As he travels he observes the changes in the landscape and in the sun. The time traveler watches as the as the sun expands and starts causing the oceans to evaporate and the plant life to start dying. When he stops in the far future he finds giant crab like creatures.
I find it surprising how Wells describes the distant future of our planet. Scientists predict that when the sun ages to the point that it starts to expand the added heat to our planet will dry up the oceans. The expanding star would also burn off part of the atmosphere causing more radiation to hit the planet, this would kill off a lot of the animal life. The crab creatures would have a better chance of surviving a more radioactive environment due to their exoskeleton providing more protection than a mammals skin would provide.
At the end of the book the time travelers heads out once more to explore the future, even though he traveled to the far reaches the first time and saw what could be the future the fact that he goes out a second time but never returned would imply that maybe the future isn’t certain and that by coming back in the first place he influenced events to provide a more productive future he sought to stay in.
