Are you ok their?
Let’s take a trip back to your sixth grade English class, remember that? When you first learned about the difference between there, they’re and their. It was simple and you spent about three days on it right? Well, our teacher should’ve spent more time on this topic because people still don’t seem to understand this. Let’s take it one step at a time and go through how each of them are SUPPOSED to be used.
There. Referring to an area or place that you are directing something. How do you miss something this simple? How could you confuse this with “their”? It is the one we use the most, THERE doesn’t have difficult spelling and has a simple meaning. How could you confuse it with possession? You should have learned this word in third grade and understand it’s meaning by now.
They’re. A contraction of “they” and “are” Ok, so I understand this one and why it might be a little confusing considering it is a contraction, but why don’t you take the time to separate the two words and see how they fit in the sentence? Yes, the words sound the same, but they all mean VERY different things. It takes two seconds to separate these two words and realize how different the word is, put together, from the others.
Their. The belonging of an object, person or animal to an object, person or animal. This one, personally, I don’t even like. Usually, when you want to show possession, you have an apostrophe, but not here. Here you have a word that you have to take the literal definition to understand how to use it, but it isn’t that difficult to learn what the definition is.
There are simple ways to avoid using the wrong version, but what people need to understand is that if you do a tiny bit of work you will save yourself a lot of humiliation. We are beginning to become lazy and instead of learning something so simple we choose to “guess”. If you cannot remember that lesson you had in sixth grade about the differences between “they’re”, “there” and “their”, then LOOK IT UP. Go into google or ask someone. Understand these simple things in life and it will make life easier. Please just take the next five minutes to make sure you COMPLETELY understand these three words and how to properly use them.
