“This will be the anti-Semitic film” and yes it was
Throughout the movie Jud Suss we see how the Nazi’s used religious symbolism to expand their anti-Semitic viewpoint. When Joseph Goebbels wrote in his diary on December 15, 1939 “This will be the anti-Semitic film,” he was not kidding around. We see that the character Joseph Suss Oppenheimer is like the serpent in the Garden of Eden story from the Bible. He “slithers” his way into the Duke Alexander’s favor by bribing him with jewels and money. As the movie goes on we see Oppenheimer, the Jew, starts to destroy Stuttgart with taxing the roads, crippling the economy. This is comparable to the serpent making Eve eat the apple from the tree, and giving it to Adam. Later, God responds by kicking them out of the Garden of Eden.
Another reason we can see the Nazi’s using this movie for their anti-Semitic propaganda tool was the way in which it brings up the “Jewish Plot.” The movie brings up how Oppenheimer looks to gain access to Württemberg for the Jews. He gains access to the city by bribery, showing the German people just how easily the Jews can corrupt the city. Slowly as the move goes on you see how Oppenheimer uses manipulation to twist things around to gain the upper hand. One instance was when Oppenheimer destroys the blacksmith Hans Bogners home because it is on the road in which he owns. Later Oppenheimer manipulates Councilman Strum’s words about the death of the blacksmith Hans Bogner.
These instances helped to perpetuate the anti-Semitic message the Nazi’s were sending. While watching the movie I could not stand Oppenheimer because of how evil he was. I would have held these same views as most Germans did when this movie was released if I did not have the background that I have today. I can understand why Goebbels used this medium as a way to spread Nazi propaganda against the Jews.
