Hitler’s Swing Band
The one band allowed in the Third Reich was indeed controlled by the Nazis and Joseph Goebbels indeed used that band for propaganda. After jazz was outlawed in the Third Reich because it was considered degenerate, Goebbels found a way to keep one band and use it to his full advantage. The large jazz band was ‘Charlie and his Orchestra.’ The band was to play music regulated by the Nazis and it was played all over Europe and Britain. The catch was, there was Nazi ideals squeezed in the songs. POW camps even got to hear the delights of Nazi ideals. Everyone loved jazz, what better way to get in their heads? Finding out a little more about Hitler’s jazz band was not surprising because Goebbels was smart and his propaganda techniques showed it. I started to wonder if the United States used propaganda in the jazz there, if that technique would have worked on Americans. Or anywhere else for that matter. I would think most likely, yes it would have worked. Think about how music affects people already. I believe this form of propaganda was a handy tool for the Nazis and could have been for others.
