Dracula: Wolves, Bats, and Fog OH MY!
Dracula has many abilities. He can turn into a bat, control wolves, rats and people, and even control fog. These abilities themselves may be part of what makes him a monster, but I believe that the shapes of the things he controls and turns into help to add to that statement. If Dracula turned into a butterfly rather than a bat, I wouldn’t be so quick to call him a monster.
Focusing on the fact that Dracula can turn into a bat, in one specific point to look at. Bats are considered, by most, to be a scary animal. They fly around at night, are rumored to drink blood, and carries rabies. These three things make bats a sort of monstrous animal, more so than a butterfly. Bats are also rodents, which increases the aversion people have to bats. This statement also encompasses and explains why the rats Dracula controls also could be seen as part of his monstrous nature.
Wolves are not animals that people dislike due to aversion, but rather add to Dracula’s monstrous nature by being terrifying animals. From literature, like “Little Red Riding hood”, to the vicious man-eating beasts in the movie “The Grey,” wolves are seen as evil beasts. This negative view of wolves stems from the fact they are wild animals, stronger, larger, and less-friendly to humans than dogs. Using wolves as one of the creatures he controls, Dracula is seen as being connected to the very dark nature of wolves. He connects to the violent side of the creatures which, again, adds to his monstrous nature.
The other aspect of what makes Dracula a monster is the threat of the unknown. Due to the fact that he is something, ‘unknown’ scares people. This mysteriousness as to what is he is, can be seen through the fact that he can control the mist. Mist hides the truth, casting a veil over what you can see and narrowing your vision. Dracula uses the mist in this very way, using it as a cloak to hide and distract when he needs to do something.
Another part of the unknown that adds to Dracula as a monster is the gypsies who follow him. Gypsies are seen as a mysterious due to the From his abilities to what those abilities say about Dracula, everything leads back to a single idea. He allies himself with dark and terrifying things of the world rather than the light and fluffy. It could also be said that his natural evil draws in the other dark things, but either way, Dracula is a monster.
