SIMILE Timeline

About the Simile Project

The original SIMILE project, started in 2003 and concluded in 2011, was jointly conducted by the MIT Libraries and MIT CSAIL (founding partners also included HP Laboratories and the World Wide Web Consortium) with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

SIMILE sought to enhance inter-operability among digital assets, schemata/vocabularies/ontologies, metadata, and services. A key challenge it solved was to make collections interoperable which are distributed across individual, community, and institutional stores — by drawing on the assets, schemata/vocabularies/ontologies, and metadata held in such stores.

The results of this eight-year effort have been used by thousands of researchers and cited in hundreds of publications — see google scholar for a selection. This project also catalyzed the emergence of the Simile Widgets community which continues to develop and extend free open-source web visualization tools, and more.
